Job Summary:
We are seeking a Sr. Project Engineer to join our Capital Projects team, focusing on rail infrastructure development. The successful candidate will lead the design, permitting, construction, and commissioning of three independent rail segments and associated rail loading/unloading facilities at our mine sites. This position offers the opportunity to drive a high-impact project while working with a talented team of engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute project plans, ensuring the allocation of necessary resources to meet objectives.

  • Lead and manage the project team, including engineers, contractors, and construction staff, ensuring the timely completion of all phases of the project.

  • Mentor and guide subordinate engineers, setting clear objectives and providing performance feedback to promote career development and foster innovation.

  • Prepare project proposals and cost estimates, detailing equipment, materials, personnel, and other resources required for successful execution.

  • Engage with internal departments to assess and address project-related needs, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals.

  • Coordinate and monitor project activities to stay within time, cost, and scope constraints, identifying and reporting deviations along with corrective actions.

  • Ensure that engineering specifications comply with regulatory and corporate standards, policies, and best practices.

  • Collaborate with the environmental department to secure necessary permits, avoiding project delays.

  • Prepare capital allocation requests and champion project funding approval.

  • Maintain accurate cost records and monitor budget performance, identifying and addressing variances.

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify project risks and opportunities, and develop strategies to mitigate or capitalize on them.

  • Oversee quality control, ensuring adherence to project schedules, budgets, and standards, and provide regular status reports.

  • Develop procurement specifications and manage bidding processes for engineering, procurement, and construction services.

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to optimize cost-effective and efficient project execution.

  • Review procurement tenders and provide technical input during award processes.

  • Update and develop standard operating procedures, providing training to operational personnel during commissioning and start-up.

  • Establish project performance metrics and contribute to regular data reconciliation and reporting.

  • Ensure project controls are implemented in accordance with company policies and standards.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field is required.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in project planning and management, with a strong track record in project execution, construction, commissioning, and handover.

  • At least 5 years of experience in rail engineering, construction, or operations, with a focus on large-scale projects.

  • Proven leadership experience managing teams of engineers, field staff, and contractors.

  • Familiarity with rail operations and maintenance practices, track design, signal systems, and bridge design is highly desirable.

  • Experience with rail right-of-way permitting and rail loading/unloading facilities preferred.

  • Knowledge of contract management, engineering codes, and industry standards is an asset.

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint) is required; familiarity with design and scheduling software is preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interface with internal and external stakeholders.
